    FAQs

What makes a beer brat? ›

These awesome brats are simmered in beer with onions and spices to make them bursting with flavor before finishing them off on the grill. Place the grilled brats in hot dog rolls, and top them with the tender onions and mustard, or serve them alongside German potato salad.

How long to smoke bacon wrapped brats? ›

Roll the hot link to wrap the bacon around itself. Allow the bacon to overlap a bit with each round and keep it tight while it wraps. Perform the same task on all of the hot links, sausages, brats, or hotdogs. Setup your smoker for cooking with indirect heat at about 240°F (116°C) for 2-3 hours.

What kind of beer do you use for beer brats? ›

Any beer will do, but pale lagers work best. Boil in the beer bath for 10 to 15 minutes, or until the brats turn white. Once your brats are cooked through, you'll want to sear them to achieve the crispy skin and grill marks we all love.

What is the best beer for beer brats? ›

I use Johnsonville Original Brats for this recipe; avoid brats already flavored with beer, as the finished dish will taste too bitter, and be sure your bratwurst is fresh (not already cooked). For the beer, use a lager, which has a clean, crisp, not-too-bitter taste.

Should brats be boiled before smoking? ›

Sindelar said, “Parboiling isn't the best for bratwurst. Because you want to provide gentle heat. A slower increase in heat.” According to the professor, brat cooking involves the unfolding of proteins in the meat and casing — and the proteins bind the fats, salt, ground meat and spices to create texture and flavor.

Do you flip brats when smoking? ›

We want the brats to slow cook and absorb the cherry smoke. It only takes about 1 ½ hours total time for the brats to fully cook. Half way through the smoking process, flip the brats over so they cook evenly. Also you'll want to check the internal temperature before taking them off the cooker.

Can you smoke raw bratwurst? ›

Place the uncooked brats directly on the grill grates of the smoker. Close the lid, and smoke for 1 – 1 1/2 hours or until the temp of the brats reaches 160 degrees F. Make the beer onions. After you get the brats on the grill, prepare the onions.

    What makes a brat a bratwurst? ›

What is a Bratwurst? A bratwurst is a type of German sausage that is generally made with pork, beef, or veal. It's most commonly made with pork. I don't speak German, but according to the always correct Wikipedia, brat means finely chopped meat, and wurst means sausage.

What is the difference between beer brats and bratwurst? ›

A beer brat is when you boil uncooked brats in a couple of cans of beer to fully cook it on the stovetop. Oftentimes, they are finished off on the grill. We truly believe beer brats are superior to any other kind of brat because they are so dang delicious.

Do beer brats get you drunk? ›

No. Frying temperature is hot enough to evaporate all the alcohol in the beer batter.

Why are beer brats white? ›

Bratwurst or “Brats” for short is a classic German sausage made typically of pork and or veal. A great brat is loaded with lots of flavor and has nice snappy casing that makes for a great bite. Most bratwurst is white in appearance because it is not smoked.
